Tips on organizing your life and maximizing space in your home
The Mess
People do more or less the same things at home. We read, watch TV, eat, sleep, bathe, dress and undress. And all these activities require things that have to be stored somewhere.
Start by looking at the problems of organizing, problems that most of us have. There is often too much stuff and too little help organizing our stuff.
Organize your life
It starts with organizing and finishes with storing. Organizing is about retrieval: knowing where things are and being able to find what you want when you need it.
Organizing makes life easier.
Take note of habits and routines. How do you live, what’s your taste? What does your home look like and what kind of things do you own? Do you use them often or rarely?
Then you can plan your storage in a way that works well for you and your life situation.
It’s not impossible. Just follow the five simple steps below.
IKEA’s 5 steps to getting organized:
- Sort your things
Group your possessions into categories that make sense to you,
such as by owner, type or frequency of use and physical characteristics,
but don’t create too many categories.
- Reduce the amount
Give away, sell or discard items that are broken, worn out or
never used.
- Assign a place
Give each category a specific storage location. Store items close
to where you will use and need them.
- Count and measure
Count and measure the items in your categories to determine the
type and amount of space required.
- Choose a storage solution
Select storage solutions that match the physical requirements
of your items, the space available and your tastes. This could
be open or closed shelving, fitted or free-standing cabinets.
Sit back and enjoy
Once you get organized, you will have some time to do what you really want to do. You don't have to feel stressed when you come home. But perhaps most important of all - you will always be able to find what you want when you need it. |
